WANT TO TAKE YOUR STUDIES A STEP FURTHER?
FLUTE+ is a webinar series that covers important flute-playing topics over 10 class meetings spread out conveniently over 9 months. This way, the typical busy adult student can enhance the learning they receive in their private lessons without overcommitting themselves. Topics which are normally introduced in lessons such as intonation, breath control, and vibrato are discussed in greater detail and without the pressure of mastery in one session. All of the information will be presented at once, after which students can process what they’ve learned at home and ask specific and informed questions in their lessons. This leads to more efficient learning and more time in lessons to play! Additionally, what this environment provides is something similar to a university/conservatory flute studio, except instead of meeting on a weekly basis, (far too difficult for most of us) will meet mostly once per month.
Classes are $40. Buy all 10 classes and get one for free ($360 total)!. If you are under financial hardship and interested in attending these virtual sessions but find this cost prohibitive, please email me at sarahcarrierflute@gmail.com. I can offer a limited number of partially subsidized spots for the entire series.
Fill out the Google Form below to secure your spot: https://forms.gle/zVJhUptxonQ19k8cA
Everyone will receive a link to the video recording of each class. This way you can enroll, even if you cannot be present for the live sessions. You will also receive any relevant pdfs via email.
All classes take place on the Thursdays listed below from approximately 8-8:50PM EST (some may run over!).
COURSE SCHEDULE
October 20, 2022 - Fundamentals for ALL levels: We will go over flute playing literally from the ground up. Reviewing fundamentals is necessary to avoid injury, even for professional players!
November 17, 2022 - Embouchure: How to form a natural embouchure and how to use it for optimal precision. The flute has a particularly challenging embouchure, so there is a lot to discuss.
December 15, 2022 - Breathing: Arguably even more important than the quality of our embouchure is the way we use our air. We will discuss how to breathe energetically and purposefully.
January 19, 2023 - Dynamics and Note Endings: We could all learn how to show greater dynamic range, right? In this meeting we will talk about the mechanics of producing different dynamics and go over some exercises to become even more effective at this important skill.
February 16, 2023 - Articulation: For everything that the flute has going for it, clear articulation isn’t something that comes easily. Get some tips and tricks on how to make articulations pop while also getting a general overview on how to produce different styles of articulation.
March 16, 2023 - Vibrato: Are you interested in becoming more expressive with your sound? There’s a good chance that vibrato is one of the key elements to work on. Discover your own effortless vibrato and really make your flute sing!
April 27, 2023 - Intonation: The difference between a flute section that harmonious versus one that is cacophonous is sometimes only a few cents away…..cents in frequency that is! Learning how to play in tune doesn’t happen overnight, but the sooner you learn how to play in tune with yourself, the sooner you can play in tune with others.
May 18, 2023 - Technical Development: Good technique isn’t just about fast fingers, but about playing with control and precision. I will give you some pointers to organize your practice so that your technique is always improving.
June 8, 2023 - Extended Techniques: Even if you haven’t encountered them in your music yet, I guarantee that so-called extended techniques can improve your flute playing. After studying with Robert Dick (one of the true legends of the modern flute) for many years, I have a lot to say on this topic.
June 22, 2023 - Masterclass and Q&A: To complete our course and put some of our learning in practice, I will have three (or more) volunteers make a video recording of them playing short piece or a section of a longer piece. I will offer some feedback, but this is meant to be a positive, encouraging, and noncompetitive experience. A Q&A will follow.
Please note that you do not have to take private lessons with me in order to enroll in this webinar! However, to any new clients who enroll, I can offer a 1-hour one-on-one session at 50% off ($50 savings).
